I Was Young Once Poem by Anisa Tara

I Was Young Once

I was young once,
Twenty candles on a cake.
Youth was my excuse,
Every endearment delayed.

I was young once,
Twenty-one candles today.
I huffed and puffed,
Regret wouldn't go away.

I was young once,
Twenty-two is scant.
Chasing after a life,
I'm still not sure I want.

I was young once,
Twenty-three a curse.
Quarter-life crises,
Can this get any worse?

I was young once,
Twenty-four a mess.
Slowly awakening to,
My growing senescence.

I was young once,
Twenty-six still uncharted.
One year I've omitted,
For a lover too soon departed.

I was young once,
Now I'm old and grey.
I'll write these sad songs,
Until I pass away.
