If Ever My Memory Visits You Poem by Martins Akhoeneto

If Ever My Memory Visits You

If ever my memory comes to you,
Let it not find you lonely in the night;
But on an afternoon of gentle blue,
When simple things around you feel just right.

Perhaps while steam is rising from your cup,
Or as you walk the quiet road back home;
Perhaps a song upon the wind comes up,
And brings a distant feeling as you roam.

Then think of me, but do not turn around,
Nor let the past persuade your heart to stay;
Just hold the love that once was truly found,
And let it rest, then gently fade away.

For once, within the journey of your years,
You were once loved, without a doubt or fear.
