If I Should Ever Know You Poem by Mohammad Younus

If I Should Ever Know You

If I should ever know you,
this is my love note to you.
You loved me as your own image,
while I was some other body's lover.
You loved everybody,
holding them deep in your generous heart,
never letting anyone go heartbroken.
You were a heart-healer,
yet your heart never grew heavy.

I remember I rebelled against you,
silly, living apart from you,
blind to the truth—you were my Mama.
You always wanted me,
a baby feeding at your breasts constantly.
Mama, the title gnostics give to you,
your love brought me back.

You are my essence, my truth, my reality.
I became a poet by your grace,
when I knew you as my true self.
This is the love letter, to myself, my true self!
