If One Cannot Give Hope Poem by Shalom Freedman

If One Cannot Give Hope

IF ONE CANNOT GIVE HOPE

If one cannot give hope
If one cannot help in any way
If one does nothing but transmit
One’s own endless complaints to the reader
Perhaps one should say nothing
Perhaps one should be silent forever
Perhaps one should go away
As if one never were.
