If We Should Ever Meet Again Poem by Richard Trembath

If We Should Ever Meet Again

Do you ever wonder
What would happen
If we should ever meet again?
Would it be like the first time,
Or the last?
They both seem so long ago,
And yet it is the first time I recall,
When we were in the springtime
Of our lives.

The days seemed longer then,
The road seemed straight and true
And yet life overtook us
With its twists and turns
And undergrowth along
The verges of the road,
More dense each mile
Until it blocked our long-shared view
Of life's true common goal.

You went your way and I went mine
Yet, looking back, I don't recall
The reason, what went wrong?
If anything. Perhaps it was just 'time'.
Time for both of us to scan life's landscape
As it lay, outstretched, before us.
We drifted, and our lives took
Different paths
To different destinations.

But what if once again
Our paths should cross?
If we had time to pause, reflect
And to exchange the stories
Of our lives?
Would we change anything?
Or simply look upon those early days
With fondness, born of love,
And wonder why…?
