If We Spent... (Untitled Five: 2008) Poem by Lillian B. Rose

If We Spent... (Untitled Five: 2008)

Rating: 5.0

If we spent as much time
Building people up
As we do, breaking people down

If we spent as much time
Asking them who they are
As we do assuming
They don't know themselves

If we could just remember
The positive actions
That brought our strength back

But we get caught in the stereotypes
Of a discriminatory world
Trapped behind the prejudices
of the common assembly

And the problem is in the hostile environment
Created by poison tongues
And the painful steps we climb
Hoping that our world will change
