If You Ever Looked Back Poem by Lacie Hebert

If You Ever Looked Back

If I left one day
Without a single word,
Would you come searching for me,
Or would my absence go unheard?

Would you pull me into your arms,
Tell me I was worth the fight?
Would you see the tears I hide
Behind my smile every night?

I've been losing pieces of myself,
Trying to find where I belong.
I've been pretending I'm okay
When I've been hurting all along.

I want you, but you don't want me.
I love you, but you look away.
Every time you say my name,
My heart forgets what it should say.

When you laugh, I feel my heartbeat
Running faster than before.
When you're near, I feel alive,
Then I'm broken when you walk out the door.

But your heart belongs to someone else,
And I'm just wishing on a dream.
You're the man I've always wanted,
The one I hoped you'd choose to see.

You bring a sparkle to my eyes,
You make my cheeks turn bright.
You're the thought that keeps me dreaming
When I'm alone at night.

I know I'm not flawless.
I know I have scars and fears.
I know I'm not the perfect woman
You may have wanted through the years.

But I don't want to be rejected
For the things I cannot hide.
I just want someone to love me
For the heart I keep inside.

I want to hold you close,
To feel your arms around me.
I want to hear you say my name
And know you truly see me.

I hate that she has your attention,
That she gets the love I crave.
But if she makes you happy,
I'll still want the best you have.

I hope she makes you feel wanted.
I hope she helps you feel whole.
I hope she protects your heart
And treats it like it's gold.

Because loving you without having you
Is the hardest thing I'll do.
But even from a distance,
A part of me will always love you.
