If You Should Leave Poem by john lino ponzini

If You Should Leave

if you should leave

if you should leave me
i won't fall crying in the dirt
nor chase you through a thorned rose garden.

if you should leave me
i won't call you back
or write you poems like this one.

and if you leave me, i'll let you go
because that is what is best for you:
to leave me.

and when you come back,
that will be best for me-
who yelps like a puppy finding his bone.
