In Defence Of The English Way Poem by Mary Champion

In Defence Of The English Way

My heart evolved to lie hidden deep in my breast
aAnd though sometimes I need to get a weight off my chest,
it takes an artificial heart to survive
being worn on a sleeve for too long.

Silent tears and hidden tears are bitter as the rest,
and baring our bewildered soul may not be for the best.
It takes an artificial heart to survive
being worn on a sleeve for too long.

The loudest cries aren't always from the heart
and sometimes, when life gets torn apart,
the only way it has a chance to heal
is far from prying eyes
demanding proof it's real.

It's a tender heart that needs a shield in place,
that knows how hard the world can be to face.
The deeper that a heart can feel, the more it tries to hide.
The cruellest hurts we ever know are those we keep inside.

Our heart evolved to lie hidden deep in our breast
and though sometimes we need to get a weight of our chest,
it takes an artificial heart to survive
being worn on a sleeve for too long.
