In Hand Poem by Ragy Sandid

In Hand

It's a typical story
That starts out simple
The young invent glory
At the expense of someone's wrinkles.

You wink at it

Because it didn't happen
To you, so you let it slide
Remember one day you were the captain
When the sea turned the tide

In the spotlight when the ship capsized
With few passengers for the ride

The job market is in upheaval
The terms of the contract changed
One day you toasted corporate evil
The next you cursed the hand they played

That's when the old stayed
And couldn't change plans best laid
After the best days were made

So you tread uncharted ground
And survey the ethereal sky
Hoping there's hope to be found
People watch you live to see you die

That's why
They say you're the lucky guy
Who survived Nagasaki
Sly!

You look at the people who loved you
And wonder if they just pretended
All they time they said they'd tough it with you
Yet with no money the toughness ended

Yet bonded
They stay because of blood
That together withstood a flood

You burn a hole in your soul
And start calling demons angels
Wonder how many lives you stole
For others to steal your spectacles

And make you a spectacle
After respectable
Unserviceable

You look at the ones you love
You wonder if poverty is a test
If it is, what is a test of?
That money is love's pest?

Yet it happens to the best
Luck doesn't last
Yet give bodies a blast

The words are reassurance
But the content is void
They look up to you for endurance
That you provide with gimmicks soiled

With tender deception of love
That you need to supply in demand
You wonder what they're thinking of
When you provide what's in hand.
