In My Own Town Poem by RIC BASTASA

In My Own Town

the faces of people
are still faces,
nothing there are
transformed
into animals,

that boy may look
like an urchin to
you
with spikes throughout
his hair or

that old woman
a camel with an abnormal
hunch
back

the gasoline boy
becomes
an alligator
its tongue preying
on the
cars and impatient
queues
of turtles

i still have respect
to this town
the men are men
and women
are mothers and sisters
of mine
