to you my friend is
a succession
of disappointed expectations

before
you plunge in
again please recall
the promises you made before

will you
consent again my dear
to be always true
to him who obsesses you right now

will you
care for him unwaveringly
in salubrity
and chronic malady

will you
love him as much
in plenty
and unexpected want

will you
remain steadfast when
time and genes
take their toll on his frame and mind

think on
it hard my love before
you agree to love him
