In long evening shadows I went watching,
Tiptoeing through teddy bears
And capsized ships and blocks.
I pulled back the curtain
To let the moon shine in upon my dream.
To watch a moonbeam grant my wish
And splash herself upon the pillow.
I beheld a vision I shall not forget;
Should I live some hundred years,
Should I become a greater man,
Should fortune leave me richer still.
The vision of his dreaming face
Will remain one treasure of my life.
I dreamt of this night
With youthful hope,
Before I met she,
Who shared the gift.
I thought it would be fine to see him there.
I imagined that my heart would swell with pride,
But at that age I did not guess
That my soul would also sing and dance.
And you who follow may judge these lines
As an echo in the halls of a thousand homes
Around the world that night,
And of course you will be right.
Each father watching his son
Asleep in a moonbeam,
Will speak the same-
I know.
