Inner Cries Poem by Marcquiese Burrell

Inner Cries

Rating: 4.0

You tried to break into my home
which led to locked doors
instead broken through the windows
dragged me down the stairway
An alien so unfamiliar
from where did you come
and why seek me?
You remind me of the devil
evil fills your heart
you know nothing but hate
has it become tradition?
who taught you these wrongs?
thief in the night, coming out of nowhere
i'm held within captivity
and taught many lies
the past wouldn't last
as you would have cast
darkness over my future
while i'll sit here
hoping for luck
for what has been cursed
as you work your vision onto me
took away the pride and told me
I was not beautiful
speak only when asked
Wanting me to be soft
So as to obey your every command
hardheaded and so tough
Should I rebel against the demands
I'd feel the whip against my skin
I'd writhe in pain, I'd be in pain
for days and weeks to come
as the brutality increased in magnitude
I wasn't alone, I wasn't the only one
here suffering
there'd be women, there'd be men
suffering the same fate
Seperated from their spouses
beaten, tortured, raped
light against dark
woman against man
young against old
This is the nightmare
a nightmare we have all awaken to
some were killed, hung to their fate
and up until this here date
some have escaped
freeing themselves from the barbarity
it's what most of us do want
to be accepted in our skin
it should be what anyone wants
to be treated as human
not an animal, not to take orders
and is punished from the onsight of rebellion
the evidence in their ambition is quite compelling
not concerning themselves much with the aftermath
and they would laugh, say that we are not equal
their ignorance in our differences is very lethal
what drives this hate?
When did life become a conflict?
When will that conflict find it's resolution?
i don't know, I don't know
when i'd be free of these chains
and yes, something will remain
the scars from these apparant wounds
they won't disappear, I will always have these ugly scars
and it will remind me of the war I have battled with
sense coming into these unfortunate circumstances
