It Is In The Breach That I Have Poem by johannes lewinsky

It Is In The Breach That I Have

It is in the breach that i have
Between the will that i have
And the need that i have
And the vision that i have
And the capacity
And the knowledge
Of the capacity that i have
And of all the capacity
accrued across the decades
That all is forsaken

For i would that i could
All of these inhabit and more
And give all of what i have
To the universe and back

Without stinting
Without reserve
And without the dread always
Of being shoved back and pummelled
on the shoulders down
(which is yet all that i have dreamed of)

And so it is that i have
Resolved not by any of you
Or it that would
insert itself perennially
between to be prevented

for is not this the definition
of Rilke's dennoch preisen
and the explanation for all
who have asserted themselves
beyond the mean
and all that have been trounced

(Adele's bleeding heart
The chains of the Gladiator)

that it is only out of this
this capacity for rejection
for allowing yourself to be
for self annihilation even

and is not this what it is to be a man
to be capable of surrendering
to the will of the other and to allow that the other
do with you what he will even if it be
to be renounced and used solely
that something other may be engendered

it is not in the act but in the re-
act that new life is born and is not this
the true meaning and definition
of evolution in action
