It Makes Me Suspicious Poem by Raymond Farrell

It Makes Me Suspicious

Let me concede
At the beginning
Of this discussion
That things may have been done
With the best of intentions
But poets
Warming chairs in universities
Or teaching in colleges
The whole setup
Makes me suspicious
Anyone being paid
By the government
(Indexed pensions, healthcare
tenure, the whole 9 yards)
Has a lot to lose
If they step over the line
And get fired
Maybe there's no need
To mind your Ps and Qs
But I think working
In a government funded cage
However gilded it may be
Trying hard to run
On a government supplied
Hamster wheel
Often results in a lot
Of huffing and puffing
And the appearance
Of ground being gained
When in fact
No one is one step
Farther down the road.
