Its Time I Play With You

Rating: 4.3

The sweet pretty things you see today
Shall tomorrow look a different way,
For change is the law;
The crowd to which we now belong,
Shall change and sing a different song,
And at us it shall gnaw. -1

Like the horse that's standing here
In moments shall be else where,
Things keep changing on;
Who knows what Fate does prescribe,
For whom She has a throne to climb
And for whom a graveyard stone? -2

With earthen dolls you did much play
When it was your childhood day
With labor and sweat you grew;
Into mud and into soil
You put your sweat and all toil
To see your harvest through. -3

In earthen temples you did pray
Before gods made of earth sand clay
To calm their wrath and make kindred;
Now the earth says, "You come my child;
Come to me, close your eyelid,
For you, is my peaceful bed." -4

"You are tired in bone and skin,
Now you are lean and you are thin,
Play no more my child.
Come to me and take your sleep
And as the morning sun does peep
You leave your bed to glide. -5

"Earlier you looked so tender and cute,
You caused to yourself damage absolute,
In chill and sun my boy;
Its time I play my game with you,
Whether you know this or like not to,
That you are my earthen toy." -6

That last stanza is so powerful. As we go through life we believe that we are in control, - -in control of the environment, our surroundings, all things we can hold. You point out the reality, in that we are the playthings. A brilliant poem, and this one goes on my favourites list.
