Jacob's Meal Poem by Ojeikpo Elijah

In the land of Canaan, two brothers did dwell
Esau and Jacob, their story I'll tell
For Esau was the eldest, his birthright was great
But Jacob, the younger, was filled with deceit
One day as Esau returned from his hunt
He was famished and weak, his stomach did grunt
Jacob saw an opportunity, a chance to gain
The birthright from Esau, it was not in vain
'Give me some of your stew, ' Esau did plead
'For I am so hungry, my strength in need'
Jacob agreed, but it came at a price
For Esau's birthright, he had to sacrifice
Without hesitation, Esau agreed
He was so hungry, he didn't take heed
And so the deal was made, over a bowl of stew
Jacob gained the birthright, a meal so few
But little did Esau know, the consequences to come
For with the birthright, blessings would run
And though he may have filled his stomach that day
His birthright was lost, a price he did pay
Oh, the lesson we learn from Esau's mistake
To not be so hasty, for our own sake
For in the end, it was Jacob who gained
And Esau's hunger, was all in vain
So let us remember, the story of Esau
And the meal that changed their lives, with just one flaw
And may we not trade our birthright for a simple treat
For it holds more value, than we could ever meet.
