Jockeying For Position! Poem by Denis Martindale

Jockeying For Position!

'They're off! ' the commentator said! And so began the race,
And forwardly each horse now sped, full speed at lightning pace.
And neck-to-neck they huddled close, too close for comfort now,
Sometimes, that's just the way it goes, not something to allow.

The jockeys fought to take the lead while keeping firm control,
Not knowing yet who would succeed as each horse played its role.
A moment here, a moment there, and thus the order changed,
When sudden gaps became aware, the horses rearranged.

But only one horse could get through, and mine came out the best,
When jockeys do what they must do, to overcome the rest.
We charged ahead a length and more as my horse timed that well,
Like all the best, it knew the score, without my need to tell.

It sought that safety all alone and left the rest behind,
As if the challenge meant to own, then face it heart and mind.
So on we raced triumphantly, dead set on winning all,
Increasing speed that set us free and seemed quite magical.

It's when the horse gives everything, no matter what the cost,
That goes beyond the jockeying and good positions lost.
The jockey sends encouragement as if their thoughts seemed one.
Their race together, Heaven-sent, for every step that's run.

And finally, when racing ends, we're tired, yet relieved,
As each of us now comprehends what both of us achieved.
To some, this is the sport of kings, of utmost royalty,
To both of us, our passion brings this share of victory!
