Just Yesterday Poem by Nedra Pepin

Just Yesterday

Just yesterday, we were playing barbies, and action figures.
Endless games of hide-and-seek.
Telling made up secrets, truth or dare.

Just yesterday, we were best friends, playing tag in the tall grass out in the field.
holding hands while coming back from the creek.
Crying when our parents' said it was time to go.

Just yesterday, we were little kids.
Watching Walt Disney movies.
Laying on our backs and naming what the clouds look like.

And today, what are we?
We barely talk anymore.
Last time I saw you was five years ago.

Today, we are alone.
Betrayed by the ones we thought loved us.
Looking for someone to turn to.

Today, we write songs and poems.
The only form of communication we have to talk to each other.
The only thing that gives us hope, that someone will understand it.

Today, we want to be like we were yesterday.
We want to be little kids, playing barbies and action figures.
But really, all we want is each other, to cry together.

Today, I still miss you.
Old flames rekindled, that sets my heart on fire.
And I will walk back from that creek, the sunset facing my back, humming that song we used to sing.
