Keeping One Promise Poem by Austin Aubuchon

Keeping One Promise

I made a promise
In kindergarten,
To a girl.
An angel to be precise.
By the tree,
With a twisted barrier,
And roots,
Rooted in time.
And it was there I made a promise.
She walked up to me
Under the blue playground equipment.
Her kingdom,
Was the very ground she walked.
The wind even carried her majestically.
Scents of lavender came with this angel.
Her words sounded like a harp,
“Are you related to coach Anderson? ”
Ask this angel,
And it was there,
A promise was in the making.
I would do anything to keep that promise.
Even if this angel couldn't.
Maybe she couldn't hear me,
Over the screams of the tires?
This angel was the only person,
That has ever seen me as more,
Then just one thing.
She would be the mother,
I would be the father.
This is just the beginning she would tell me.
Her caramel hair would dance,
Having the bangs in a small bump,
In the front of her…
There is something in those days of kindergarten,
That made it the happiest days of my life.
I know that she was the one who made it so.
And so we made a promise.
Children would run past,
Eager to learn more,
But I watched her tear up as she left.
It was that promise.
That kept me back.
She was my world…
She is my world,
And I would move to St. Charles,
Give up everything in this world,
Just to see
Her beautiful,
Soft face
But she wouldn't care.
She is always caring about everyone,
But the one who loves her unconditionally.
The angel I fell for died.
But the promise didn't.
The promise still lives,
And for this promise lives in me.
For me.
There was this time.
She was running.
Laughing with her soft voice.
She tripped.
She scraped her knee,
And keeping that promise,
I picked her up,
And carried her to the nurse.
I love that girl.
That angel.
She is that world in which I was whole.
Now I am alone…
Wait,
Maybe I can find her still?
Maybe she will become my angel again…
Maybe I will keep that promise.
And find this angel.
