Knocking At Our Door Poem by Denys E. W. Jones

Knocking At Our Door

Why are you knocking at our door,
Begging us to let you in?
Why are you so very poor?
Why so hungry? Why so thin?

Why do you set out full of hope,
Seeking streets all paved with gold?
Why do you crowd on ships and boats?
Why are you landing on our coasts?

Why do you have so many kids?
Surely they won't make you rich.
Why do you think we've work for you?
You are many, jobs are few.

Why do you flee your native lands,
Stare at us with outstretched hands?
Why do you fill our TV screens?
Why do we see you in our dreams?

Why can't we sleep soundly, snore?
Because you're knocking at our door.
