Last Night I Dreamt Of My Mother Poem by Merlene Campbell

Last Night I Dreamt Of My Mother

We stayed inside from the storm
Outside the wind blew
The trees banged and the windows rattled
My younger brother was there
My mother stood still, small in frame and powerful in statue
She was younger then I remembered and skinner too
I missed her and told her so
I wondered aloud why she had been away so long
To which she replied there is not much I could do
Then I remembered, she couldn’t come
I held her fast and asked should I go get Dad?
He was still outside in the storm
Mother replied, no he will come in when he’s ready
Soon I would wake up
