Last Rays On Snow Clad Fields Poem by Deanna Samuels

Last Rays On Snow Clad Fields

The sun, already low in the clear blue sky
Glittered on the acres of untouched snow
Fields and fields of recently yielded crops
Overlain with a white crisp icy blanket
A large flock of Canadian Geese descended
Honking loudly, reminiscent of baying hounds
Settled on a wide snow-covered meadow
Disturbing, turning over the crisp packed flakes
Furrowing for insects that might be burrowing below
Tugging at grass blades or seeds left scattered from harvest
Their appetites heightened from lack of easy sightings
A herd of cows crowded together to combat the cold breeze
Their hooves churning, mixing up the snow and soil beneath
Eagerly awaiting milking time to escape from the frosty air
Shadows become longer as the sun quickly descends
Fir tree contours dark against the failing light
No layered snow upon their piney boughs
Had melted away from previous days warmer rays
Deciduous trees of various strain appeared stark and defenseless
Utterly bare, boughs naked, their glorious autumnal dress fallen
Scattered and withered upon the ground encircling the rooted trunks
Their silhouettes stretched out as a long lean disjointed fingered hand
Not a cloud in the sky as last sun rays fall even lower upon the horizon
Darkness slowly edged in, enveloping the whole scene into the night
