Last Wishes Poem by Sophie Evans

Last Wishes

Rating: 4.0

Marching into darkness
Grim as death itself
Wishing,
And hoping,
But only time will tell

The waiting room is bright
But to me it seems like hell
When will we find out?
Only time will tell

Everybody’s listening now
Straining to hear those words
What’s the doctor saying to the nurse?
I hear little pieces
Like drugs and overdose
But nothing like
What I want to hear most

We know he didn’t pull through now
We may be grieving but we aren’t slow
Everybody’s crying
But my tears don’t show
Remorse is running through my brain
But my face is still stone
Why should they know my feelings
When I don’t even know?

But how could he be so stupid?
He knew it wouldn’t be long
He was playing with his life
And didn’t let his feelings known

He couldn’t hold a job down
So he stayed put on the lounge
And continued with his habit
He became another number
Another pathetic tragic

Like a blood-sucking leech
Draining our energy and our funds
We kept trying
But never, ever won

We fought the final battle
But in the end it was up to him
And obviously, he didn’t win

Did he try?
Did he not?
I guess we’ll never know
But we will all keep wishing
Wishing he didn’t go

So now you know the story
That tale has been told
Just to make sure no-one else
Goes down that awful road
