Lastborn Odyssey Poem by David Olughu

Lastborn Odyssey

The last voyage before the harbour halted.
Other sailors already out in the open;
some have approached the opposite port
and are being towed as time has made them require support.
Some are in turbulent waters,
and are being battered daily;
with a few sinking and others still intact.
On my part, I still face calm currents;
carried by tender waves out to sea.
Each splash nurtures.
Each rain teaches cultures.
Slowly I venture into deeper depths,
soon to be left alone
to sojourn into the unpredictable sea I see.
But just like others, I conjure courage.
Because I was raised with a compass I hold so dear.
A compass that remains still even in storms.
A compass that abolishes fear,
directing me up north,
coaching me always to fear not.
Keeping me on course and preparing me for turbulent waters.

There's no turning back now,
my boat has set sail.
