Lead By Example Poem by Stevie Hogendoorn

Lead By Example

Looking in the mirror dissecting myself
She told me that I could be a better man
Picking out self-help books from the shelf
“Take a look at this” a twelve-step plan

Just to please her I would take a look
Another guru with another key to living
Telling how he meditates at some brook
And that it’s not about taking but giving

The more I read the unhappier I got
The steps meant letting go and change
I like me for who I am and thought lets not
Maybe it isn’t me that is acting strange

I was expected to accept how she is
How come that doesn’t go for me?
Is there something she could’ve missed?
Maybe a step or two perhaps even three…?
