Lessons Poem by Jonathan Waterbury

Lessons

Rating: 5.0

we were taught young
that to be different is to be vulnerable
and to be vulnerable is to be a dead woman walking
and that only the right kind of silence
means safety

i still remember
years later
how it felt
to be a comma in a world so full of sentences
to be the voiceless in a world so full of noise
but i am a dancer
among the paralyzed
watch me bloom
and do not cry when the rain falls on my petals
