Let Me Slumber Awhile Poem by Ahamad Ilyaas Vilayathullah

Let Me Slumber Awhile

Rating: 3.5

I hadn't slept much,
Just five centuries or a little more.
I still felt sleepy
And liked to snore awhile.

The thunderbolts in the sky
And the rumblings from beneath
Didn't wake me up.
Often my eyes were open
But my heart and mind were
Deep in the hold of slumber.

With the heavy eyelids
And the frozen brain,
I was in a dream quite sheen
About the glory of my past.

I was so proud of my ancestry
And their merits,
And thought me to be
Privileged to slumber awhile.

My heart is in the sepulcher
There with them;
And you won't be
Kept waiting more
Than a few centuries.
