Linnet Poem by Titus Keya Omwaka

Linnet

Oh! Lovely Linnet
The girl ever on the internet
I threw the fishnet
But the fish turned out to be a crocodile
I shed tears for a while
Oh, Linnet! Get serious.

When I approached you
I thought you were better than my former
Now your mom is in a coma
You need to buy her medication
Your nonexistent sibling needs fees for her education
Oh, Linnet! Get serious.

After I first called you
Your gas cylinder needed refilling
Your cousin to your uncle started ailing
Your grandfather's land needed tilling
Oh, Linnet! Get serious.

When I message you
Your landlord has made you angry
You're hungry
You need rent and food
And will refer to me as good
Only when I commit myself to end
Your financial misery
Two hours into a relationship
Oh, Linnet! Get serious.

Were these problems waiting for me to approach you?
I still don't have a clue
Before I ask your name
I knew you're not someone I could tame
Someone financially and intellectually lame
You asked me for money to go to the salon
Oh, Linnet! Get serious.

It's true that ladies of my generation
Make us look at marriage with trepidation
But my Linnet, after only two hours
Knowing her had already made my life sour
The shopping list that she handed me
Was enough to drive a company to bankruptcy
Oh, Linnet! Get serious.
