Little Gods Poem by Rebekah Gamble

Little Gods

Words are the strongest
things in the universe: little gods.
It was with words
light and dark were created
and words that separate them
to this day.
It was words that coated
the hands of the Rwandans
in the Spring of 1994
before they were coated by blood.
There's filth here,
filth in words.
Words created filth,
and the concept of cleanliness.
Words coat like dust
the wisdom in the minds
of the old or thoughtful.
Filth.
Filth in the barrier of light and dark,
filth covering cruelly beautiful Africa,
filth as words, as little gods.
Power in words,
child of thought, mother of action.
Words are the strongest
things in the universe: little gods.
