Little Sliver Poem by Ruth L. Rivers

Little Sliver

There you sit, little sliver
Yes, it was I who gave you
Yes, it was I who made you
Without warning and knowledge I placed you
Not foreseeing how you'd stay
Not guessing the havoc that you'd make
I did not wish for you there
I would remove you with care
But
You are not mine any longer
I do not give you strength to harm her
I do not continue to let you grow
So now that it's said and you know
You will have to let her, let you go
Yes, I tried once or twice
To make you let go and play nice
I tried with coercion then force
To bring some closure to open doors
You infected bitterness into spaces
Allowing anger into other places
Though smiling sadly I watch on
The damage that's been caused is strong
So,
Here we meet at an impasse
You sticking to your list
Me staying with my bits
She's taken you up as her own
Holding on, she won't let go
While I wonder at it all
And ponder who will be first to fall.
