As far as introductions go,
ours was the usual one -
a simple hello.
As strangers who just met,
we kept our distance - for awhile.
And as time went on
something was lost between us -
our guard.
Our strangers heart was melting -
we were becoming friends.
And then, for whatever reason,
you smiled at me.
A true honest-to-God, smile.
That’s all it took.
I was hooked.
Did you know you make my day?
A smile from you is all I need.
I look for it everyday -
occasionally I look for your knife too,
but I have my own now.
Your friendly smile
is all I’ll ever need.
It’s etched in my mind now.
Did you know I’m gonna miss you?
Miss our meetings at the drive-thru.
You make faces at me,
I pretend to squirt you with the hose.
You feed me cookies
and I sneak up behind you
to give you a hug.
I hear you’re headed west,
and although you won’t physically be here,
your smile is in my head forever.
