Locker Room- By Anonymous Poem by Kevin Prou

Locker Room- By Anonymous

My leg shakes as I walk through that entrance
I remember the years that have passed
And the years yet to come
High school has never been the most
Enjoyable of times
Football players ruling the halls
The men only focused on being men
If you are not an athlete in this environment
I am sorry
You never stood a chance
The locker room is often times
The most dangerous ground in a high school
If you are not 6-2 and 200lbs
You will be swept up in a stampede
Of sweat, cleats, and pads

I steer clear of that room like
It is the ninth level of Hell
A sign hangs over the door
Abandon all hope ye who enter here
If you are a nerd or geek
Turn away while you still have some dignity
Because once you enter there
It will have been ripped out
Along with the very innocence
You once held

For all actions have consequences
Except theirs
Your action just happened to be
Drama club member
Or Getting an A on the last math test
Simply being who you are
Does anyone change this environment
No
Because boys will be boys
No matter the scenario, excuses will be made
Boys will be boys
They will hold you down
Hands grabbed behind your back
As slurs are spit
What are you now? A Faggot?

And you are left there
Like the disgraced animal they make you out to be
This environment won't change
It has been built on the backs
Of everyone who says that simple phrase
Boys will be boys
And high school will always be a battle ground
For the weak, the forgotten
Those who want to change the system
This cycle

I went to an all girls' school and always wonder what my life would have been like had I gone to the local public high school…..
