Looking Twice Poem by Rick Shaw

Looking Twice

On the front lines in a war on hurt and hate,
a wounded friend lay with her spirit ebbing,
she cried out for help in a desperate plea,
not knowing if anyone was listening.

He came to her side and listened with care,
in spite of his own hurting wounds,
and tended her gently like she was his own,
so warm feeling returned to her heart.

back from the front line and on the road to recovery,
she gazed at him with a fondness surreal,
how did he know she was there?
where was he before? how could he see what the road was ahead?

she turned away, he looked twice,
she turned back to see a man with insight,
their eyes locked and then he was gone,
understanding conveyed without a word being spoken.

their brief time together re-kindled their hopes,
made them stronger and willing to fight hate,
yet with both of them serving in different units,
there ways will be close but apart.
