Losing Myself Poem by Aimee Rozen

Losing Myself

Look at me now:
do you see what I've become?
You wanted to see you looking back
when you look into my eyes:
are you disappointed?
So many times have you wanted me
to follow blindly in your footsteps.
I tried at first.
I wanted your approval.
It's human to need acceptance.
But I am different from you:
can you handle it?
Can you look at me and see
me for me?
or do you see what you all
have been programmed to see?
I feel lucky, I slipped through.
I can think for myself.
I can become me.
At least I would have been able to
if it weren't for you.
You rejected me
when I needed to be accepted.
You turned your back
when all I wanted was
a friendly face.
I would believe in God
if I weren't so afraid
he would forsake me too.
You have deserted an unfaithful sheep.
I have been lost to you.
In the process,
I lost myself.
