Losing Us Poem by Joseph White

Losing Us

An autumn wind blew her hair back
as she said goodbye for the last time
on the porch of the house we called home
We lived, loved there and lost there
I lost my heart there
The taxi came and she rode out of my life
as I watched her go out of sight, out of my sight
The windows were empty as her heart, as my life
I threw an old newspaper through the glass
just to seal my loss
It mattered to on one, but
we lived and loved there
Our separate lives were all we ever knew
from that day forward and for ever more
Even if I have to go out of my way
I go by the house to remember
When the windows were lit with warmth
and see the worn porch where we sat
on summer nights and winter days
We lived and loved there
It matters to no one, but
We lived and loved there
