Lost Kiss Poem by Maria Schmitt

Lost Kiss

I almost wish I had kissed you back,
I could feel it in my gut – the need.
Your fingers curled around mine, tips to
knuckles to palms, all mine.
Too much liquor,
too little acquaintance.
Your neck smelled nice and your hand on my thigh –
these things I can’t ignore or forget.
You tried to sneak kisses,
little kisses,
through sweet words and caresses but I still
had a little sense left.
Playing that song again? Deja-vu doesn’t
help my deliciously drunk situation.
I almost wish I had kissed you back in the room there
just to say I had – or hadn’t – the details a secret either way.
Sometimes it’s nice to step
outside of yourself and take random pictures with
mysterious men whose faces you can’t focus on…
any more liquor?
You whispered in my ear, my lips brushed your neck –
public display of [an] alias.
Numbers and lyrics in the background – why wait?
You’re here and I’m here and where will we be tomorrow?
Not here.
Lost kiss.
