LOVE IS ALWAYS SELFISH
Prabir Gayen
Love is always selfish,
Love is not Love at all;
It is always a business,
A secret bargain
between the heart and the heart.
Love for mother,
love for father,
love for brothers and sisters,
love for friends and the beloved,
whatever name you give to love,
whatever form it takes,
deep down,
it carries something of its own.
There is a hidden need,
a silent thirst,
a desire unseen.
Love becomes a wonderful mystery,
yet somewhere within it
moves an unknown need.
Love is love,
neither pure nor impure.
It is a guiding spirit,
inherent,
hidden deep down.
Father loves his children;
mother is more virtuous in love.
Her love seems selfless,
yet somewhere within
there may remain a hidden desire
to receive love in return.
And so,
even love becomes a business.
Still, love is essential.
It is the epicentre of existence.
Without love,
life becomes dull,
life becomes empty.
Life springs from love
and dissolves into love.
Love is the substratum
of existence.
Still, it is selfish,
a subtle business
when it has not yet become
divine in nature.
Love is divine always,
divinity is its nature.
Still, love becomes selfish
when it cannot exist
without motivation.
As in action,
if there is action,
there must be a result,
or some motivation
hidden behind the action.
Is any action possible
without the least motivation?
Action without thought of result,
action without desire,
action without asking
what will come?
Yes,
it is possible,
but very rare to find.
Like:
Do your part
and leave the result
unto Divinity.
Love,
and do not ask
for love in return.
Such love is rare,
very rare to find.
For at the subtle level
there may still remain
a little selfishness,
a little expectation,
a little movement
towards oneself.
Yet there is a way
to make love only love,
love without motivation,
love without desire,
love without selfishness.
The only way
is to make love divine.
If you love your parents,
love them as divine manifestations.
Adore them with love
as if you were loving
the Almighty Himself.
Let your love
for the beloved one
find a path towards Divinity.
As every river
finds its path
and falls into the ocean,
let every love
find its path
and fall into God.
Love is always love
when it is for God,
for the Guru,
or for the Inner Being.
Love is the way
to find God.
Love is God itself.
Your love for any human being
should become love
for the Almighty.
Then love becomes pure,
sublime,
free from craving,
free from aversion,
free from expectation.
Love as much as you can.
It is the only way
to find your real being,
your hidden Self,
your true identity.
But offer that love
as a priest offers flowers
before the altar of God.
Love may always be selfish,
but selfish love,
when touched by awareness,
can become a sacred path.
And walking that path,
the heart slowly forgets itself,
the lover, the loved,
and the love itself
begin to disappear.
Then,
in that silent disappearance,
you may meet
your Inner Being,
your real identity.
