Love, Please Wait Poem by priscah Mutswenje

Love, Please Wait

It came like rain at noon,
When I had books to read, not a tune,
A sudden knock upon my heart,
As if the sky tore me apart.

Love, why now, when exams draw near?
Why whisper sweetly in my ear?
Your roses bloom, but thorns still bite,
You steal my sleep in the dead of night.

I see your fire — it glows so bright,
A candle dancing, a dazzling light.
Yet smoke clouds drift across my brain,
Leaving my thoughts in tangled chain.

I dream of grades, of goals, of flight,
But you keep pulling with gentle might.
My essays wait, my pen grows cold,
While your stories of forever unfold.

You dress in beauty, soft and sweet,
But trip my steps, confuse my feet.
You taste like sugar, but sting like spice,
A tempting gamble, never twice.

So hear me now, O restless flame,
I will not play your fleeting game.
I'll chase my visions, bold and true,
Love, step aside — I've work to do.

Come back someday, when I am free,
When dreams are ripe and so is me.
Until that hour, my heart won't break,
I choose myself — so give me a break.
