Love Worth Loving
(written after the last child left home)
I heard the tolling of the bell
Each ticking of the clock,
I wondered 'round the silent house,
I wished the walls would talk.
I picked a few things up and then-
I laid them down again,
I straightened up a pillow sham,
Forgot where I began.
The teardrops ambled down my cheeks,
They blended with the weather,
So fleeting were the days we shared,
Our family together.
No young kids hangin' 'round the bar,
And rummaging for food,
The hollow shell that's left for us
Is a hollow kind of mood.
I place the phones back on the hook,
They've lost their prominence,
I gather remnants of a life,
And stand there in a trance.
I hear the silence loudly whirrr
The sluggish minutes march,
I wonder where my life has gone,
My lonely heart felt parched.
But..listen, music to my ear
A deisel winding down,
The truck pulls in and idles
And it sets my heart to pound!
Oh, thrills! Is this the guy I met
And courted long ago?
And woulda walked a million miles
Through rain and sleet and snow!
Ah, time and changes roll along
I would not trade for aught,
Our little home so full of life,
Nor empty castle now.
Now is our time to live and love,
The years our forms are gracing,
But there's no love that e'er could match,
Our forty years embracing.
And as we climb life's sunset hill,
You know that life gets better,
Than when your love was young and fair,
And wrote your first love letter.
Our lives are rich, our lives are full,
We live for one another,
We love our family grown to size,
Thank God, we love each other! !

Beautiful love poem, well articulated and insightfully penned from heart with conviction. Strong bond of love which endures is like a good wine - the older the better. Lovely poem with good rhyme scheme. Thanks for sharing Dorothy. Please read my poem MANDELA - THE IMMORTAL ICON.
