Loving From Afar Poem by Ashleigh Michaud

Loving From Afar

Rating: 2.8

Love is a powerful thing to give and take
Love is something you want from someone who’s not a rake
I am telling you this of a person who encounters it a lot
To truly enjoy this piece, you must blank your scattered minds of thought:
Once upon a time is how she started her life once born
Day by day as she grew up, her heart was automatically torn
I would sit near or far and watch this creature grow
And she never once thought of me; she never did know
The hole in her heart was never filled until that one special day
The year her dad decided to remarry was the year she gave her heart away
This guy she met in her fourth year of school
He thought he was amazing, hot, smart and cool
I would watch them grow into their blossoming love
It intrigued me to see how he, from under, meshed with someone from above
She smiles shyly and looks at him so filled with emotion
He grabs her and twirls her around in a circular motion
Month after month, I watched from afar and in awe
Then, you’ll never believe what I saw
They had split up; he broke her in two
She cried after him yelling “I love you”
I stared and then I started to cry
Never did I figure out the reason why
Later, as I kept an eye on her so close
I began to understand the way she goes
Her head up high, she tries to hide those feelings so tender
That guy was lucky she didn’t ruin his car fender
Love life for this girl afterwards was rejection and cruel
She never got over her love for the one that had her drowned in a pool
Day after day of agony and excruciating pain,
I finally see her come out of her house into the rain
She’s texting, I tell you, and her face is blushing with delight
I never thought I would see that glow illuminating the night
I follow her to her destination; it was another person’s home
She enters through the door and walks up the stairs; she’s gone
I barge in after her and sneak up the stairway
I catch up and see her go inside a room and disappear. Away
She went to another life of broken hearts and tears
I couldn’t help myself. I broke down in the corridor with the fears
Of her never seeing daylight again. I ran to the door and began to slam
My body against the door. After a few more times, I gave in and said, “Damn.”
Then it opened and she was there, the girl I have been watching over
And next to her was the most beautiful man I had seen in forever
I stared into her eyes, they seemed more familiar to me
Yet I couldn’t think of why and then I dawned. You see,
This woman I have been watching over was the person I had dreamed of often
Dreaming of finding this man; it was like she knew this of me. Her face softened.
I held out my hands to the replica of myself
And she took mine in turn, giving herself
Over and letting me back into her life.
I knew she had forgiven her past life of strife.
I was her past and I guarded her future as best as I could
Now it was time I believed in me rather than knocking on wood.
I embraced my present self with a smile upon my face
And walked back into my former life and took my righteous place.
Then we turned together as one person once more
And stared at our man we had found. Love came sweeping through the door.
He flinched at our touch and was a little shocked.
But his hand reached out to hers and their fingers locked
In love they were, the three of them, and it was rare
But as you look into the girl’s eyes, her past is still there.
