Lyrics Lurking Poem by Edith Niemeyer

Lyrics Lurking

Lyrics Lurking in the Shadows

Parts I, II & III — Complete Writ

Part I — They're Lurking

[Spoken Intro]
Shhh…
Don't turn on the light.
I almost have it.
There—
behind that thought…
Nope.
Gone again.

[Verse 1]
There are lyrics lurking in the shadows,
Peeking 'round the corners of my mind,
Little fragments dressed in maybe,
Leaving half their meaning behind.
One crawls underneath a memory,
One goes dancing down the hall,
One says, "Write me now or lose me…"
Then refuses to explain at all.

[Pre-Chorus]
I hear a word—
I catch a rhyme—
I swear I had the perfect line…
I reach for Quill—
And wouldn't you know?
The blasted thing has gone.

[Chorus]
Lyrics lurking in the shadows,
Come on out—I know you're there,
I can feel you breathing softly,
Tangling verses in my hair.
You can hide behind tomorrow,
You can haunt yesterday—
But sooner or later I'll catch you,
And Quill will make you stay.

Part II — Quill Finds Them

[Verse 2]
Some arrive at two in the morning,
With absolutely no respect for sleep,
Marching through my quiet bedroom
With promises they're mine to keep.
Some show up while I'm busy,
When there's not a pen in sight,
Then disappear the very second
I finally get the wording right.

[Spoken]
Oh, NOW you go quiet.
Figures.

[Verse 3]
There's a chorus underneath the staircase,
There's a bridge behind the door,
There's a title hanging from the ceiling
That I'm certain wasn't there before.
There's a metaphor beneath the table,
And a rhyme beneath my chair—
And Wandering Quill comes running,
Yelling,
"EDITH! There's another one in there! "

[Chorus]
Lyrics lurking in the shadows,
Come on out and take your turn,
Every whisper wants a melody,
Every little thought will burn.
From the nonsense comes a story,
From the silence comes a sound—
And the words that hid within me
Come wandering back around.

Part III — Some Were Waiting

[Bridge — soft]
But some don't come with laughter.
Some barely come at all.
They wait behind an old remembrance,
With their backs against the wall.
They've lived there through the decades,
Never asking to be known—
Until one quiet little sentence
Tells me…
"You're ready.
Take me home."

[Final Chorus]
Lyrics lurking in the shadows,
I won't hurry you along,
Some of you were born for laughter,
Some were waiting for a song.
Some will dance with Wandering Quill,
Some will leave a little scar—
But every word that finds the daylight
Tells me something of who we are.
So keep lurking in the shadows,
If that's where you need to be…
I'll leave the door cracked open—
And when you're ready,
Come find me.

[Spoken Outro]
Well…
That's the last one.

Oh no.

I just had another thought.
