Madiba Poem by Claude H Oliver II

Madiba

Born in a quiet corner of a vibrant land
Standing tall, learning the ways of men
Becoming
Leader, strong voice
Spear of the nation
Unbowed
Costly choice freedom-home, wife, children
Wanting life but facing death.

Yet privations could not extinguish
Freedom’s light for him and those to come
Fighting for many
Yet walking his path alone.

Within prison – learning freedom
Souls seemingly free – yet caged by hate and fear
Embracing his fears and hates
Disciplining their energy
To fuel compassion
Extend an open palm
Ease fears with kindness
Receive indignity with dignity
Return indifference with compassion
Return haughtiness with humility
Beginning a climb to great heights from a humble prison cell.

He emerged unbowed yet humble, powerful yet kind
Of himself fully aware, yet inclusive of others.

O’ South Africa, your greatest son loved you deeply, gave himself fully,
Nurtured your baby steps to freedom
Chose life and love over hate and death.
