Make Haste! Courage Make! Poem by Emmanuel George Cefai

Make Haste! Courage Make!

Make haste!
Courage make!
Though it be winter cold
Today
Though rain-drops patter soft
Today
Though thunder rumbles rare
Though lightning rarer be
Though weary days pass slow
Though dreary be the days
Though dark and pensive grow
The faces
Though rains massive be occasional
Though rasping of the winds
Though door and window chinks
And nooks
Round corners of he house
Singes
Round the old chimney erodes
Even when Dawn smiling alights:
The more that Time flows
The nearer the day of hopes
Of warm times and warm days
Grow, move, progress
And aspiring in the air
Already one feels whiffs
Of freshness of the Spring
And odour of first bulbs opening
Millimetrically, as by hiding
And in secretive secret unfolding:
And of the first flowers scent
And of the night-dews scent
Akin to Spring
And the harking of the lark
The nightingale at night
The frosty grumbling owl
Of Wisdom and of Dawn!
