Mary Poem by Tracy Craighead

Mary

Mary

My gift from God,
My baby girl
You are something special
And You would change my world

Your imagination pulled me in
To your secret world
With fantasy teachers and friends.
Ms. butterfly or Dorothy,
Alice in wonderland or Belle
Who you be each day, I could never tell

I knew you would be the last
The final babe to nurse
To hold as an infant
With me as your universe

A secret bond, that changes so fast
piece of heaven, that will never last
It evolves, as I know it should,
But my baby would grow
And change for good

I savored each moment
Taking pictures in my mind
These memories of each passing year
imprinted and easy to find

I gave you what you wanted
Each and every day
I had fun with you,
I relaxed and I learned to play

I saw you do things that I could never do
You are brave, driven, talented
Fearless and true
You throw yourself backwards
And twist into the air
I cover my eyes and say a little prayer

You have so much to give
I know you can't always see
The knowledge you possess
The eloquence and dignity

I read your poetry
Your truth in written word
A revelation of your maturity
I am often blinded now
to the woman that I see
No longer a child that once
Stood in front of me
