'Masterblaster'
He broke rock for a living,
set charges where mountains resisted,
came up blackened from the mines,
then slipped beneath another world
where only bubbles told his story.
Stone gave way.
Water gave way.
Hard things learned his measure.
When his time came
there was no lowering into earth,
no last handful scattered on a lid.
A law, a virus, a season of distance
claimed the old rites.
So the man who had spent his life
moving ground and crossing depths
went up instead as heat and ash,
leaving those of us behind
to bury him the only place left:
in tale, in memory,
in the long report of those
who still speak his name.
