Maybe I Do Poem by Salimah Davis

Maybe I Do

Maybe I Do

Maybe I do want you to follow me

and to know that you're here to stay…

and for you to take me up in your embrace

make me feel so safe and let me know that

no one could ever detonate the bond we have between us

Maybe I do want that matching throne next to you

and to be put on a pedestal and to be seated

above the common people and to truly be treated

as the royal queen that I am…by everyone

Maybe I do just want you to want me

as fervently and passionately as I always want you

Maybe I do just need to know…why?

Why me when I do not enhance you but instead inhibit you

and your abilities and restrict your possibilities.

Your career is going to soar

but I'm the sandbag to your hot air balloon tying you down

Maybe I do want to hear

the three most dangerous words in the world

escape your lips so they can work their magic,

caress my ears and penetrate my mind and scar brain with the memory…

Maybe I do…but I would never ask you to…
