Memories Poem by Nick Downer

Memories

The days are so long in this place
they blend into nights that are cold from
the dark velvet sky that gives no light.
Words are whispered in quiet tones,
the dark's ears swallowing them.
They're words filled with quiet pain.
Silent memories filled with ghosts
are engraved eternally in shallow flesh.
The memories are monsters,
lurking in shadows waiting
to wrap their ice clutch around their prey.
Acid tears slip down cheeks
etched with trenches where,
innumerable tears have flowed.
Memories are silhouetted in the darkness.
Smiling faces peer from
frames worn only by a few long years.
They sit there, taunting, teasing,
telling of what is gone
and will never be again.
These memories are like demons,
that hide under your bed
waiting for the moment when
you fall off the edge
and they won't let you go.
Your eyes close,
and your insides fill with screams
that can't escape.
The memories fill every corner
and turn them to black.
Your mind starts to fade,
and the demons take over.
