Mirror Poem by Nicole Guess

Mirror

Do I know you?
I know I’ve seen you before
Passed by your face
Walked through your life
But you can’t be me.
I don’t remember getting to this point
Can you answer my questions?
When did I lose my grip?
Where have I been?
How have I gotten this worse?
What am I doing here?
Who am I? ...

Maybe he made me like this.
Or did I create this monster,
That is staring at me.
I am lost,
Forgotten,
Depressed,
Frustrated.
I am her.
I can see it
Through the glare,
Glazed expression
Depressed eyes
Lines of past moments
Bumps of pollution
And the greased veil drawn back
I can see what use to be.
What should have been.
I see the dreams,
The hope,
The future I once held. When I look in the mirror
Do I know you?
I know I’ve seen you before
Passed by your face
Walked through your life
But you can’t be me.
I don’t remember getting to this point
Can you answer my questions?
When did I lose my grip?
Where have I been?
How have I gotten this worse?
What am I doing here?
Who am I? ...

Maybe he made me like this.
Or did I create this monster,
That is staring at me.
I am lost,
Forgotten,
Depressed,
Frustrated.
I am her.
I can see it
Through the glare,
Glazed expression
Depressed eyes
Lines of past moments
Bumps of pollution
And the greased veil drawn back
I can see what use to be.
What should have been.
I see the dreams,
The hope,
The future I once held.
And I wonder what happened
To me.
Did you distract me?
Pulled the covers over my eyes
Cheat me out a future
Where I didn’t need you.
